Protecting children in contact with the law through the application of restorative justice

The new study on the effects of restorative justice and mediation for juveniles was launched today in the conference “Protecting children in contact with the law through the application of restorative justice”. The conference aimed to raise awareness on the importance of the application of restorative justice, the alternative forms of dispute resolution and the avoidance of litigation for children in contact with the law in Albania.

During the Conference, the main findings of the study on the impact of the application of restorative justice for children in contact with the law in Albania were presented. The study highlights the lack of prevention and protection programs as the main factors for the involvement of minors in conflict situations and in contact with law. Promotion and application of Restorative Justice is one of the key elements in the protection of children's rights. Minors who have used the restorative justice programs can more easily integrate into society and are less prone to use violence in the community and in the family.

‘Protection and implementation of rights of children in contact with the law requires the commitment of the state to take concrete measures in accordance with international standards for the rights of children and policies at the national level. Promotion and application of Restorative Justice is one of the key elements for the respect and protection of children's rights. Children who have been involved in these restorative justice programs can integrate more easily into society and are less prone to use violence in the community and in the family.
Programs, policies, practices and systems should be based on the concepts and principles of prevention and protection of the best interest of the child, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
