Albanian children call on decision makers to take action and stop children dying from preventable causes - Global Day of Action

Thursday 19 December 2013

On October 23rd, about one hundred Albanian children joined Global Day of Action for child survival marathon relay, as part of Save the Children’s EveryOne campaign.

Save the Children’s Global Day of Action was a truly worldwide event where thousands of children participated and we harnessed the power of one Save the Children working together in all countries, from local communities to global forums. It was an opportunity to give a boost to our advocacy and campaigns to accelerate national-level progress toward MDG 4, and the elimination of preventable child deaths.

In Albania Save the Children called on the government to make a real difference to child survival by ensuring government spending on Health is really effective and every child in Albania can access quality health services no matter where they live, where they come from, or who they are. And we advocated for making a real difference to newborn child survival by promoting exclusive breastfeeding by all mothers.

The Day of Action in Albania had children at its centre. Children from three regions, supported by Save the Children, participated in the advocacy summit where they challenged the Albanian decision-makers and asked them on the issues of child mortality. Children asked questions and received direct answers by the Minister of Health and Minster of Education and Sport.  The event was opened by a child speech / personal story related to child survival issues.

Two teams: Eagles and Stars, of Albanian children, ran the Marathon relay of 42,000m and competed to break the current world record.
